Ok when we go to England we'll take an empty suitcase.

I have a few of the books! You will have to dance for my amusement in order to read them, however.

EXCEPT I JUST FOUND A DOWNLOAD FOR THE WHOLE SERIES, SO HA!

(I’ll still dance for you though, Chelsea.)

fuck-it-fire-everything:

After making a mere $84 million at the U.S. box office, Star Trek Into Darkness is considered by some to be a disappointment. Perhaps the problem is that it was a touch confusing. To help our readers better understand it, we've complied and answered these…

Yeah :( Damn it, Into Darkness, I wanted you to be better than you were. But you still brought me beautiful Trek people, so.

"where several major characters are explicitly and repeatedly fisted by one another." DOES THIS MEAN SOMETHING ELSE IN NEW ZEALAND??

Nope, we use fisting in the same way. Is that not happened at the Red Wedding? Was it not about fisting?

This seems like the appropriate time for this video, even if it’s not quite seasonal:

I really want to write a bit of meta about how Hannibal is a dark horror/fantasy, NOT a procedural/crime drama or whatever people seem to be expecting of it. it makes a lot more sense when you look at it in the context of the right tropes.

OH GOD YES PLEASE DO. it's definitely not your typical crime drama at all, and so far removed from a typical procedural that it's weird to think of it in that context. I've been referring to it as a fairytale because it's not only structured like one, it feels like one — like it's straight out of some horrifically dusty lovecraftian tome or something, a strange and dripping alternate universe, much like our own, but where serial killers are normal fare and their murder tableaus are all Goya paintings come to life and men like Hannibal Lecter are allowed to exist. like you said — dark horror & fantasy. it's too surreal to be anything else.

emphasis mine because this, THIS, thissssss. i'm leaving for nearly a month away tomorrow night & i'm hoping to get lots of fic writing done, i'll try to get all my notes for this meta ordered into something coherent too. i don't have balph's way with words, but i can try. ;)

The phrase Bryan Fuller and a lot of show-related people have used to describe it is "elegant horror", and Fuller is clearly a fan of the genre (he's a great admirer of American Horror Story). Hence: all the Shining references, the surrealist imagery, the creepy and/or melodramatic musical cues, the excessively rich and opulent tonal palette, the logic-and-physics-defying "monsters" of the week, etc.

direct confirmation from Fuller, in reference to Buffet Froid

Hannibal is "elegant horror;" it's horror in elegance, it's sullen southern gothic, the shuddering obscenity of freud and lacan

I started writing about the fairytale aspects, because if you really dig down they are EVERYWHERE in this show: liminality; seduction; bargains with dire, hidden prices; body horror; alternate realities; entrapment (THROUGH FOOD); incomprehensible and idiosyncratic codes of ettiquette and behavior, the violation of which usually results in terrible punishment; personal transformations (though that falls under liminality); LOSING TIME; Will as a human man who went under the hill and never came out, or, somewhat alternately, as a Tam Lin figure, or, yet again, an innocent who stumbled into a borderland and found himself vulnerable; Abigail Hobbs as a changeling child.

But it got very, very long, so I'm doing a separate post instead. Coming soon to a blog near you & etc.

#hannibal as a fairy tale—a REAL fairy tale #fairy tales are stories about being consumed and brought back to life #about losing time #about being impregnated while asleep and waking up to twins sucking at your breast #about agreeing to let a seemingly harmless fairy do your work for you and make you rich in exchange for cream #until it turns out your neighbors notice that things aren't right on your homestead and they burn you as a witch #or your firstborn disappears #about a single bite of food damning you forever #about entrapment and deception #about rituals and codes #IF YOU LOVE THIS SHOW YOU LOVE FAIRYTALES AND YOU MAY NOT EVEN REALIZE

I kind of want this to be different reading rooms in a massive library, like history, literary fiction, dogs, arcane sciences, design, natural sciences, religion, art and special collections.

I should write a story about this.

I was up the entire night having this weird freakout about school, and it consisted of me lying in bed and a l m o s t getting to sleep before a stray thought like “YOU AREN’T QUALIFIED FOR ANYTHING” gamboled through my mind like a llama with a flamethrower strapped to its back. And then I would just lie in the dark for another hour ._.

Suffice to say that when I finally fell asleep at 7 AM, it wasn’t restful and I’m still tired.

I want a movie about a little girl, aged like 11-12, going through the stuggles of prepubescent girl life, with her entire inner monologue is narrated by Samuel L. Jackson.

The Avengers - mental hospital AU

- Can you tell me about the patients in ward M, Doctor Fury?

- Well, patients Banner, Stark, Odinsen, Rushman, Rogers and Barton share a very peculiar condition. They have an undifferentiated type of schizophrenia, and there's a lot about their conditions that we still don't understand. But over the past few years they've developed some sort of collective delusion. They believe they're some type of heroes; The Avengers, they call themselves. Both together and individually they face overblown, grand conflicts against an assortment of enemies: human, alien, monsters, gods, you name it…
